English Language X

Common English mistakes I see daily, in newspapers, magazines, and hear on television, radio etc. (Add a pseudo-American accent and they become teeth-grindingly irritating).
  • mother-in-laws instead of mothers-in-law (and other familial relationships too).
  • there instead of their and vice versa.
  • advice instead of advise (and vice versa)
  • alright instead of all right
  • between ... to instead of between ... and
  • different than instead of different from (especially common in American television). Different to is also acceptable.
  • brang and brung instead of brought
  • between you and I instead of between you and me
  • and etc is not needed when etc is sufficient.
  • Mine's instead of mine. Same with our's, their's etc.
  • Wrong use of its/it's in sentences. It's is always a contraction of it is or it has.
  • substitute with instead of substitute for
A word to the wise - standardise.
