Forex issues ahead

The Cap'n hasn't said much in probably over a year. Well this morning I decided to put in a few words on the Forex situation on the Rock.

The background is that there has been a big forex problem for well over a year. Ordinary people and some businesses have suffered.

Word from ground level is that despite various reassurances, the situation is only going to get worse.

If you don't care what your money is worth on the 'world stage', you need read no further. But if you do care you may have been wondering 'What the hell to do?'.

Well this post is not to be taken as advice or implied advice. I'm throwing up a few ideas for consideration.

There was recently 'advice' given by some bigwig in the TT Express Business Section, about Bitcoin. The advice was correct, in that fiat currency (which is about forex) is needed to purchase Bitcoin. In addition 'punters' have to contend with price fluctuations of Bitcoin which are wild over the last 6 months - if they could get their hands on fiat currency to purchase it. That's a bad gamble.

Bitcoin is only a 'vehicle of value' to move value elsewhere. So it's not rocket science to think that there may be other less volatile vehicles of value that can be transferred. Anything that could be bought on the Rock and legitimately sold abroad is a vehicle of value.

Rock-crawlers may wish to consider things like diamonds, gold and other jewellery. Immediately people start bawling about getting conned and 'Wheddah price ah gold go drop' etc. So hol' on what about the price of the T&T dollar dropping? How does dat compare to any probable fall in price of gold? Eef anybody dee take dee time before opening dey trap [Notice I break out into local broken English], dey would see that the price of gold has actually been appreciating in the last 4 months.

Dee value of yuh cyash could fall 30% or more from dee time you fly out of dee Rock and land in Miami. But dee equivalent value of gold most unlikely to fall dat much in the same time or over a few days. In fact yuh gold necklace bracelet etc could be worth 3 - 10% more over the same journey in a stronger US Dollar currency. So in dat scenario yuh eh bothered eef yuh lorse say 10% in reselling yuh gold. Eh heh? Yes - eh heh! Hol' on, I eh here to advise people how tuh do dee above safely, so eef yuh get yuh gold jewellery t'ief orf yuh, or eef yuh get conned on purchase or resale, doh blame me! All I doing is exploring the expected probabilistic gains to losses. I eh doing a spreadsheet fuh yuh on costs of moving gold out versus gains. So i's up to you to work it out if it makes sense. If it doh make sense tuh you, leave it out.

Right - back into proper Queen's English. I'm not telling people what to do! It's a free country - they say. So, people could decide for themselves to do something or do nothing.

What is the probability of the T&T dollar devaluing? Well ask yourself a question: 'Would I be buying TT dollars and expecting it to go up in value in 6 months?' If your answer is, "Sure!" - then you need to keep your money right there on the Rock. If your answer is, "No!" - then you may wish to think a bit more deeply and possibly take action at your own risk.

I know of no lawful restriction on people buying gold or precious items and moving it out of T&T as their personal possessions. I am totally not interested in your money  - you who reads this - whether you have money to move - or whether you want to move it. I eh selling nutn! And to be clear - I am not selling gold or any precious items.

Back to bathing your dog, or bison or whatever - sorry for taking up your time.

12,000 IDIOTS!

I am distracted this morning by a significant sign of monumental idiocy! Yes - there are more important things in the world - some of them also idiotic like North Korea threatening a nuclear strike - but this one where 12,000 people gather to hear a charlatan, really snatches attention away from everything else. See Angry Benny Hinn blasts photographers (TT Express 2013-04-14). Oh and you must see the short video below, which is unrelated except that it refers to a messianic Patrick Manning and his see-ah woman, on your fav Rock/heap.

The TT Express reported that, a 69 year old man who was suffering with prostate cancer, whose condition was not treatable was “whisked to the front line by a relative”. Unfortunately we aren’t told whether this incurable cancer was cured by the power that works through Hinn! Shame on the TT Express! After all Hinn could just make a whistle stop tour of the Nation’s hospitals and empty them in a fortnight - and I’m sure the Gov’t of your fav Rock/heap would donate generously to his Almighty’s mission.

If you look at nothing else, see here http://youtu.be/wioTQQw0edw?t=4m where Hinn says that in effect he is not to be held accountable for healings that weren’t healings because he is not the healer. Errh.. um.. so how does anybody hold to account ‘the real healer’? Not possible? Sure.. some tell me that God cannot be held to account. I disagree. I’ve held God to account before. I’ve since been told that there is a specially reserved cell in Hell with my name written above it. I dare say Hell doesn’t know what hell is coming to them! They may well find out down there! It’ll never be the same.

But hold on, don’t be too distracted by a ‘Bat rocketing into hell’! These people on your fav Rock/heap were encouraged to part with up to $USD 100 per head. Whilst I have no access to the exact figures, assuming each gave $USD 25 (equivalent to $TT 150), that could mean that Hinn collected 12,000 x $USD 25 = $USD 300,000!! Not a bad or unreasonable lower estimate, considering that more donations would have poured in from equally idiotic non-attenders (for two days work).

I really cannot go into it - proving how monumentally idiotic 12,000 people are. All I can say is that they are collectively idiotic to the tune of $USD 300,000 - and I think that’s a whole pile of idiocy gathered right there.

Oh - some of you may be wondering what’s the picture of the semi-nude female above with the jugs hanging out, about. That’s just another sign of collective idiocy. But that’s for another blog. Stay tuned. ;)

Close call–every second counts

The Jumbie of his own free will has asked me to post this up. He suffered a serious heart attack this morning [2012-06-25] around 06:00AM. He had been admitted to Hospital for a bout of angina over the previous few days. Obviously, being tough like a bison – and with the excellent responsive medical attention from a first world medical team, he has survived this very close call.

At about 2012-06-25 17:05 BST, I was lucky to be able to speak with the Jumbie by mobile phone whilst he was in his hospital bed. Yes – no burly, sweaty, ill-mannered ‘ward attendants’ barking, “Ayye!! Ayyye!! Yuh cyah doo dat!! Turn it orf!! Turn it orf!!”

Events unfolded between about 02:00AM and 06:00AM this morning. Jumbie was unable to fall asleep due to chest pains and other cardiac (heart) related symptoms. There were ECG changes that suggested a worsening of his condition. And would you believe, at 05:21 he was busy posting on Facebook!!?? Yes he was! Chrysst!!! He had posted, “Is the substrata a believer of religious doctrine??” Shortly after this, he fell seriously ill. A nurse was in attendance – and had gone to find some equipment. She returned within seconds to find Jumbie almost unconscious. He told me that he was aware of all that was going on, but could not move except for his eyes and to breathe. Jumbie was stunned by how sudden it all happened. A team of medics and nurses rushed to the Jumbie and began working on him; IV lines and IV medication etc. No – his heart did not stop, but almost did.

For a while he was unable to speak or respond. His arms and legs were totally weak but he related (in our conversation), “It was like a mind trapped in a body that couldn’t move.”

He was  stabilised quickly so that they could then rush him to theatre for emergency treatment. They found one artery in his heart was blocked and that had to be stented. Shortly after that, by about 06:30 AM, he was back on the wards.

Importantly – yesterday morning the Jumbie was given the option to be discharged home and return as an outpatient, . However, in conversation above, he emphasised that he had listened to his ‘substrata’, which led him to opt to remain in hospital. Had he not listened to that inner voice and had succumbed at home, he most probably would have been a goner. It’s interesting therefore that he was posting a question about the ‘substrata’ at 05:21 in the morning, whilst still rather ill.

When we spoke, he was in good spirits and delighted to be still alive – so much so, that I was able to give him yet another ribbing, about how much this first world rock has done to save his life. This is the second time around and a much closer call with ‘eternity’. He stressed that, “Within 5 seconds I was incapacitated.. and every second counts!!”. I could sense how time flowed in his mind. Very sobering thoughts indeed his emphasis on ‘time’ – the seconds do flow so much more slowly when one brushes against eternity. This is a wake up call for all.. make every second count. Put away petty differences.. make the most of the time we have.

“Ah, make the most of what we yet may spend,
Before we too into the Dust descend;
Dust into Dust, and under Dust, to lie,
Sans Wine, sans Song, sans Singer, and--sans End!”

Thought for tomorrow

The survival of the human race is truly our collective ultimate right. Rights afforded by humanity ought not to be used for the total destruction of humanity. Those who use rights as shields under which they may safely conspire to effect such destruction, risk having their rights stripped from them.

Jiddu Krishnamurti – the reluctant ‘messiah’.

jk

It has taken me about three-weeks of reading and listening to video material for 15 hours, to come to write this. So much in awe am I, about this great soul. I had read one of his books in my late teens and sadly did not realise at the time that he was alive. And even more sadly, did not know he had passed away in 1986. George Bernard Shaw had declared that he was the most beautiful human being he had ever met and Aldous Huxley became one of his close friends. What follows is a really amazing story – and I warmly invite you to follow it. It could be life-changing.

Krishnamurti (May 12, 1895 – February 17, 1986) was an extraordinary man, who made an important mark on this world – even if many do not know of him. Krishnamurti was born into a Telugu Brahmin family in what was then colonial India. It was the unique sequence of the death of Krishnamurti’s mother, when he was 10; his father, Jiddu Narayaniah, seeking post-retirement income – having left the colonial British Administration; his father’s association with the Theosophical Society (based in Adyar) that led his father to move Adyar in Madras – which all ‘triangulated’ to facilitate discovery of young Krishnamurti. Those events would lead to Charles Leadbeater of the Theosophical Society finding Krishnamurti, on behalf of Annie Besant (then president of the Society).

Early life history and development…

Wikipedia has done a really extensive write up on Krishnamurti. I’ve decided to give most references at the end so as not to cause too many distractions. In fact I’m adding references long after I’ve posted this. However, video is worth a zillion words! Click that on the left and there’s more below.

Below I continue to excerpt and crystallise key parts of a truly exceptional 90-year life history from parts of Wikipedia and elsewhere.

Hereafter Krishnamurti is referred to as K – as he was affectionately called by many a friend.

Defining himself
His father was initially reluctant to cooperate, but later acceded, recognising the advantage to his son, and that he could not independently acquire the means to place his son in the position of advantage that the Society were offering.
The Theosophical Society was actually in search of a new leader who would bring a new enlightenment to the world by unifying spiritual and religious movements. They were a western organisation with strong links in England. Charles Leadbeater of the Theosophical Society was said to have clairvoyant powers, and found K on banks of the river-village of Adyar, at the age of 14. Leadbeater asserted that Krishnamurti had one of the purest most innocent auras ever observed and selected him to become the next messiah. K was then selected groomed for that role.
Dissolution
England
Krishnamurti and his brother Nityananda were adopted by Annie Besant and taken to England in April 1911. K spent the next ten years of his life in England under a very carefully managed regime of exercise, education and meditation. His acquired command of English was astounding. He mastered English in about six months it was reported. He did not excel academically and failed to enter Oxford as it was intended by the Society. He was confronted by ridicule as in England about being the ‘chosen one’. He lived a luxurious life but without much privacy. He yearned to find peace and time to himself to think.

America
In 1922 on a trip to the United States, he found privacy and relaxation. He and his brother Nitya, found peach in the Ojai Valley in California. He was able to re-embrace nature and found a freedom he once had when running around on the beach in the Bay of Bengal at the mouth of the river Adyar. While he enjoyed that, there was growing expectation from the Theosophists that he would deliver their message. His skills in oration and use of English grew even more. The Theosophists created a separate organisation called ‘The Order of the Star in the East’ specifically to take care of his needs and to facilitate the Theosophical Society’s ultimate mission. K was never at peace with all this and he tried his best to say so.

On 17th August of 1922 K had unusual experience. It lasted three days and featured him feeling very hot, being intermittently confused, and regressed in his behaviour. There was a ball-like swelling in the base of his neck at the start of the first episode. On the second day he was according to three witnesses including Nitya, visited by Lord Maitreya. On the third day three unknown ‘figures’ were seen around him. They were not described further in Nitya’s notes. These episodes, referred to as ‘the process’  recurred at intervals until K’s death. But they had occurred almost every night between mid-August and December 1922. Nitya had made detailed notes of all these goings on and had sent a long narrative to Mrs Besant.

Nitya who had been suffering with intermittent bouts of tuberculosis, died suddenly and unexpectedly on 13th November 1929 due to complications of flu and tuberculosis. This shook K’s faith in Theosophy even more because he was assurances by the movement about Nitya’s health. Nitya was the only person he could speak with openly and in complete confidence. His passing away was said to break Krishnamurti – but not for long. Twelve days later K resiled and there was no hint that he was disturbed by Nitya’s death. However, it was clear that Nitya’s death shattered the last vestiges of faith he had held for the Theosophist’s grand plan.

Tensions continued to rise between K and the dyad of Annie Besant and Leadbeater. Long into the grooming process, on August 3rd, 1929, at the age of 34 – twenty years after he was selected and supposedly well prepared to take up ‘post’ -  he decided to dissolve his intended role and The Order of the Star of the East. This put a serious dent in the plans of the Theosophical Society. He returned all money and property to given to him by the Order, including a castle in Holland and 5000 acres of land to various donors.

He continued his life’s work in humility – never seeking accolades or awards, never accepting followers or worshippers, seeing relationships between the ‘disciple and guru’ as potentially exploitative and creating dependence. He provided doubt, scepticism and tools for looking within. He travelled the world extensively and shared his thoughts. He accepted gifts and financial support from people who felt inspired by his work. He left behind a staggering set of writings, video and audio.

In his later years, K  acknowledged the strange turn of events in his childhood and said that if Leadbeater had not found him, “I would have died”. A lot of stuff went on in K’s life.. too much to cram into this blog.

K gave his last talk on 4th January 1986 his last words in that talk were: “Creation is something that is most holy. That’s the most sacred thing in life and if you have made a mess of your life, change it. Change it today, not tomorrow. If you are uncertain find out why and be certain. If your thinking is not straight, think straight, logically. Unless all that is prepared, all that is settled, you can’t enter into this world of creation.
It ends.
“ (The last two words were barely audible and would not have been heard by the audience, but recorded on tape).

Fascinating -  that K in his last public talk, told people to recognise where their thinking was not straight and to do something about it. I cannot help but connect this to my own thoughts on Inefficient Thinking.

K’s death
Krishnamurti died ten minutes after midnight on 17th February 1986. He was not alone. He had contracted cancer. He was losing much weight in December 1985 and January 1986. Tests subsequently confirmed a cancer of the liver and/or pancreas. K was in severe pain and treated intermittently with morphine. He came to realise the end was nigh and he coped with it masterfully.

On the morning of 7th February 1986 K was asked a question written to him by Mary Cardogan, ‘When Krishnaji dies what really happens to that extraordinary focus of understanding and energy that is K?’ K swiftly responded, "It is gone. If someone goes wholly into the teachings perhaps they might touch that; but one cannot try to touch it.’ He paused and added, “If you all only knew what you have missed – that vast emptiness.”  Later that morning it appeared that the question lingered in his mind. He recorded the following, his last recorded words:

“I was telling them this morning – for seventy years that super-energy – no – that immense energy, immense intelligence, has been using this body. I don’t think people realise what tremendous energy and intelligence went through this body – there’s twelve-cylinder engine. And for seventy years – was a pretty long time – and now the body can’t stand any more. Nobody, unless the body has been prepared, very carefully, protected and so on – nobody can understand what went through this body. Nobody. Don’t anybody pretend. Nobody. I repeat this: nobody amongst us or the public, know what went on. I know they don’t. And now after seventy years it has come to an end. Not that that intelligence and energy – it’s somewhat here, every day, and especially at night. And after seventy years the body can’t stand it – can’t stand any more. It can’t. The Indians have a lot of damned superstitions about this – that you will and the body goes – and all that kind of nonsense. You won’t find another body like this, or that supreme intelligence operating in a body for many hundred years. You won’t see it again. When he goes, it goes. There is no consciousness left behind of that consciousness, of that state. They’ll all pretend or try to imagine they can get into touch with that. Perhaps they will somewhat if they live the teachings. But nobody has done it. Nobody. And so that’s that.”

Note carefully that he refers to seventy years four times. This was clearly not his 70th year!! His intellect was fine until the end. It is unlikely that he would that mistake four times in a row. I think that something happened when he was around 20, that is unknown or undiscovered by many of us. K was the sort of person that left you to discover, he did ‘teachings’ but did not see himself as a teacher – recall that he avoided being a leader, guru or person in authority. Note also that he said ‘..it’s somewhere here, every day, and especially at night’; referring to something that of tremendous energy and intelligence that had been ‘using’ his body. I think that the events between August and December 1922 were probably what he was alluding to – because it appeared that something so powerful overtook his body and mind that he was in agony repeatedly at that time. And note that most of the episodes he had ‘endured’ occurred at night. However, his states of altered consciousness were seen as a driver for his exploration of the mind and the human condition.

Conclusion
K’s
selflessness and his new brand of philosophy or spirituality, made a deep impact on millions of lives across the world. That impact was probably much less extensive than if he had held to his predestined path, as was planned by the Theosophical Society. However, Krishnamurti’s steely determination never to impose truths on people or to lead them as a guru, would set a rock-solid foundation for those who were of similar determination, to find reality. Uncharacteristically, K said, “.. there is no teacher.. no pupil..there is no leader...” – a set of views that would fly in the face of many organised Eastern and Western spiritual groups and religions. He further asserted that It is said by Wikipedia that “Krishnamurti's lasting influence is hard to gauge in an objective way; there is no organizational or other entity based on his philosophy, whose progress can be measured. His insistence that there be no successors or interpreters has so far  prevented any individual or group from claiming to represent a continuity, or a unique understanding, of his philosophy.” It’s not for me to decide upon that. I am simply thankful for Krishnamurti's life and his ‘light’. Where and how I shine that light is up to me – as he would probably have said.

The life and times of Karen Carpenter

I guess many who know me would wonder why on earth I should be bothered about this –and  have I not anything better to do with my time. And my response on the issue of time would be that I decide what I do with my time and what my priorities are.

Karen Carpenter died in 1983, at the age of 32 due to complications of anorexia nervosa (AN) i.e. a heart attack. Yes – some of you didn’t know that could be a complication of AN. Take it from me who is knowledgeable on this, that it is a genuine complication of AN (and you can Google it if you wish).

Karen was destined to be probably the biggest name in music in her era! There was a certain kind of feeling that came through in her voice that connected with millions around the globe – her voice had instant impact on people. It wasn’t just her voice, but her manner too that brought out something inside. She sang from something deep inside the soul. Something that disturbed her perhaps. We know of this in lots of singers. Another example is Gerry Rafferty. His song Baker Street was to foretell the way his life would flow and end. But Karen Carpenter had never let on what was wrong inside. Like most anorexics, she was an accomplished liar in respect of her condition.

Anorexia nervosa is a mental illness. Some people get into debates about whether it is a physical illness. I entertain no debates or questions about any of that. It makes little difference and is a moot academic point, I could argue for example that all mental illnesses are physical illnesses, because without the physical existence of a brain their could be nothing mental. You see where that’s going.

AN is a particularly troublesome condition to treat because the will of the mind is turned against itself. I call it a kind of suicide – but there may be no clear wish or intent to commit suicide. Karen Carpenter was intelligent enough to know that what she was doing to herself could lead to death – after all she ended up in a hospital a few weeks before she died.

There are several documentaries and re-enactments of her life story on YouTube. The one to the left is probably most accessible. The other 9 parts become obvious if you get to YouTube.

There are many lessons to be learned from the life and death of Karen Carpenter. No – I’m not the type to start telling you what to extract. If you’re the kind of person who thinks more deeply about things you’ll find your own lessons in this.

Best wishes to all.

What is not freedom..

“Democracy is not freedom. Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to eat for lunch. Freedom comes from the recognition of certain rights which may not be taken, not even by a 99% vote.”

Like a menstrual period..

I’m likened to a menstrual period – that thing that women in general hate, yet need to define their femininity – and which humanity seems to need until procreation in ‘test tubes’ becomes the norm.

WTF am I on about dis time? And you wonder if I’ve finally gone stark raving mad, finally!! Hey – the Cap knows what you’re gonna think before you think it. I better dan Sai Baba oui! Winking smile

Well yuh know yuh always have tuh wait fuh it eh. What I mean is that ever so often – repeatedly like a menstrual period nuh - I revisit and revise things that are of deep personal value to me. I re-etch on my soul ever deeper, certain thoughts and values. This morning, my subconscious directed me to revisit some poems that I had blogged before. I share them again via the YouTube clips below. I am re-inspired to continue on my ‘path’.

Shit Transplant - cutting edge treatment.

Well, this is no joke. You’ve probably heard of heart transplant, kidney transplant and liver transplant.

Now you’re probably thinking, “What’s the Cap up to now?” Well  this article can help in two ways:

a) You’ll learn much about shit.

b) You could lose some calories either vomiting or missing a few meals.

As funny as it sounds this is truly about ‘shit transplant’! Yes – it is about taking shit out of one person and putting it in another person. “And why pray tell would anybody want to do that?!!” – yuh hold yuh nose and  scratch yuh cocoa-scorpion head wondering.

Right – shit transplantation is about treating various kinds of bowel problems that are caused by altered gut bacterial flora. Some people with chronic diarrhoea syndromes have responded remarkably to the treatment where all kinds of antibiotics have not worked.

Those in in the UK may listen to the BBC Podcast on this (some in other countries may not have access). Those who do not have access to the podcast may learn more here at The Scientist and Internal Medicine News. This treatment has been around from the 1950s but has only recently been re-discovered.

In essence the procedure involves liquefying faeces from one person, filtering it, screening it for transmissible diseases etc and then injecting it down a nasogastric tube into the small intestine of the recipient. The results of the procedure are seen practically over-night. People feel better – bowel symptoms relieved permanently (from early recent reports).

Any volunteers? Well – hear what – if you get caught ‘talking shit’, you could just say you had an incomplete transplant procedure and blame yuh doctor!!! Jumbie, doh even t’ink about it!

Goodwill from a stranger

I was paid a visit by the Captain over the weekend, who had been in my area and decided to drop by. We had lunch at a restaurant called Mish Mash, a Jamaican eatery fairly recently opened. The Captain introduced me to Jamaican ‘festival’ a sort of sweetened ‘bread’ that is really nice. And I was also re-introduced to Jamaican jerked chicken. It was great, but not as spicy as I make mine… I have a thing for really spicy foods. The Captain has photos, if he decides to add them in a post.

Anyway, during our conversations I was telling him about a particular incident that happened to me some time ago. I was relating how I was on my way to work one morning in a taxi when I realised, nearing the destination (my workplace) that I had forgotten my wallet. I desperately searched my briefcase, my jacket pockets, my trousers (pants) and even my shirt pockets and the car (thinking it may have fallen on the floor) to no avail. I just didn’t have it. Before I continue I must add a small detail. In all the years I’ve lived in England and in Birmingham I have always used the same taxi service. No other.

I explained my predicament to the Pakistani taxi driver. He was fairly new to the company, a perfect stranger whom I was meeting for the first time that morning and so I was stunned when he reached for his wallet and pulled out £20 and handed it to me.

To say I was confused was an understatement. Here I was, owing this man money for taking me to work and he was handing me money?! At first I honestly thought he was mad and ignored him. He waved the money insisting I take it. Sure he was losing it somewhere, I asked him why was he giving me money? His response further surprised me.

He explained that without my wallet, I would have no money (or bankcards to access money) for lunch or any other expenses for the day, and no money to get back home. He insisted I take the money and ‘pay him back when I next saw him’. Now, for anyone who knows, that may not be for weeks… the company does not sent the same driver all the time when a customer calls.

I was rather touched, and even though I offered to come later and drop the money off to his company’s office, or to have home come to my home after work, he declined. Returning the money when I saw him was good enough.

I stopped off at work, had my lunch and a return trip home, all on his money. I didn’t se him again until over a week later when he came to take me to work. I then returned his money, offering some additional interest which he politely declined once again.

I have another similar incident of goodwill which I will relate at another time.

Amazing New Therapy..

Right – well allyuh know dee Cap does read all kindah t’ing right. So – I happen upon an article in the journal “Complimentary Therapies in Clinical Practice”. Jess hold on wid dee questions in dee back o’ yuh head – puhleese.. I is not a complimentary therapist  or psychologist. I was doing a search on the concept of ‘multifinality’ and accidentally came across dis particular journal paper.

Right – back to whuh as was saying. So in dis journal I come across dis novel therapy dat dey was evaluating. Guess what it called? Guess nah man!

“Prolonged Parent-Child Embrace” Therapy!

The article abstract from Welch et al  on this in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice (2006) 12, 3–12, states:

“This pilot study was collected within the course of private practice to assess the progress of children with severe behavioral disorders who were treated effectively with a multiple family therapy prototype, Prolonged Parent–Child Embrace (PPCE) Therapy. Subjects were a consecutive series of 102 patient children aged 4–18 years and their families. Children and their family members were guided for 16h over two consecutive days through intense PPCE Therapy. Families were instructed to continue PPCE Therapy at home for at least 1 year. Scores were compared statistically using t-tests and analysis of variance. For 96 children scores declined on two written measures by approximately 50% between baseline and follow-up (P<0.001). Results showed that PPCE Therapy resulted in significant and prolonged improvements in symptomatic behavior in a majority of children.”

Whuh dat means is dat it works. Errrm.. uhhhh.. am I surprised. How much blasted research do we need to tell people about dee basics of all manner of things related to jes ‘living’, man? Right – well fuh dat ah go gih dee Jumbie some pressshaahhhh. LOL. Mr Jumbie – please note dat dis research shows dat there is a workable alternative to ‘breakin’ a cheil ass’ – you hug the child more often!

Strangely enough though – for adults - if I could invent a therapy for stupidity I might call it: KYAT! – Kick Your Ass Therapy. ROFL.  Ah have a funny feeling, it won’t be very popular. Back to the drawing board!!

120 days and counting

From one rotdog  at the Trinidad Guardian:

Persad-Bissessar took the oath of office on May 26, two days after the historic landslide victory against the PNM, and immediately got to work, dealing with massive flooding across the country.

Two days later, she named her cabinet. And four months later, she has fulfilled a majority of her pledges - at least 21 of the 32 from our count - a first for any government in Trinidad and Tobago. (If our tally is inaccurate, please send us a note. For quick reference GREEN is for done; RED is for in progress)

Here's what they promised and what they delivered:

1. Laptop computers for all SEA students entering secondary schools for the first time (Done)
2. Expand and improve GATE (Done)
3. Change senior citizens grant to senior citizens' pension of $3,000 a month (Done)
4. Kill the property tax legislation (Done)
5. Have an integrated approach to address flooding and food security (Done)
6. Re-afforestation of areas burnt in last dry season (Done)
7. Rehabilitate and pave existing access roads, build new ones (In progress)
8. Establish the Ministry of the People (Done)
9. Review the minimum wage (Done - change to $12.50 an hour from $9)

17. Establish a $100 million LIFE fund for children (Done - legislation to be passed)
18. Camera technology at traffic lights, system for ticketing offenders (In progress)
19. Government ministries must develop strategic plans in first 60 days (Done)
20. Establish an Economic Development Board (Done)
21. Establish a Civil Society Board (In progress)

30. Repair leaks in all WASA lines (In Progress)
31. Each minister to provide one-year action plan to Cabinet (Done)

Seems to me, the accomplishments of the PP in 120 days is a vast amount more than that of the PNM in 8 years… but that’s just me…

Most murderous; towards milk and honey

Well it’s supposed to be a New Year – everybody wishin’ everybody ‘HAPPY NEW YEAR’, wid big grin on dey face – except me of course. I eh wish nobody Happy ‘nuthin’. I eh even send out a single pos’cyard, self. Why? To increase my carbon footprint and score brongney points (aka brownie points) wid people, and keep up appearance? Nah – I eh in dat. Who vex, vex.

Most people t’ink I need a dose o’ antidepressants or shock treatment or supm. Nahee! I happen to live in dee real world. Yes i’s a new year.. but i’s dee same ol’ khaki pants. So – whuhappen?

Well on dis supposedly Haaahpy New Year I’m suppose’ to be enjoyin’ - wid meh hypocritical Cheshire cat grin - I happen to glance dee TT Express. And there I am assaulted by reality. Eh heh? Yes – eh heh!!

  1. Squandermania – Mary King - “During the property tax debate the Opposition charged that the Government squandered almost TT$300 billion over the last eight years or so… Our manufacturers, who have found it impossible to break into the global market, have cheap, subsidised energy as their competitive advantage. When the RIC recommended rate increases for T&TEC our Government stalled these increases for years and then allowed only certain sectors to have increases, all the while subsidising T&TEC. The subsidisation of energy, the use of cheap natural resources to foster industrialisation, including the proposed aluminium smelter, is economically inefficient - squander-mania.”
  2. A breakdown in trust – Express Editorial - “James Philbert provided his own insight into the central theme of this latest report. He had disclosed that some 42,000 citizens had submitted applications for firearms licences. …Such a disclosure would have presented perhaps the most graphic clue to what this new report has revealed, that public trust in the ability of the state and its related agencies in crime fighting has plummeted.”
  3. The challenge of hope in 2010 – Michael Harris - “And let me make it abundantly clear that when I speak of a problem of governmental incompetence I do not refer only to the current Manning administration. While this administration may very well be the worst we have ever had the truth is that all our governments have been fundamentally and essentially incompetent.”
  4. Fire storm is a-coming – Rafique Shah - “People look and listen, and they do not like what they are seeing and hearing. It’s going to get worse in 2010. While the country’s economy is resilient to a great extent, we are sure to experience the fallout from wanton wastage during the years of plenty. More people will be on the breadline even as the ranks of the underemployed swell…. That, my friends, is where the seeds of revolt find fertile ground. I write with authority on this because I’ve been there, done that. A firestorm is a-coming. Fat-cat Taylor, beware.”
  5. Bobol and the Chinese connection – Selwyn Ryan – giving an insight into how China is flooding the globe with cheap labour and how Dongkey Rock is falling victim to this.
  6. Sorry we can’t join you Minister Joseph – Express Editorial - “Trinidad and Tobago still registers as one of the most murderous places on the planet, a distinction in which no citizen, least of all a Cabinet minister, should take pride.”

And eef dat eh bad enuff check “Crime numbers that eluded Martin Joseph”

Oh boy – dat sure as hell sets the stage for a lovely 2010 – don’t it? So all dem people who wish you Haaahpy Xmas and New Year and t’ing – what all dat count for? A temporary grin on dee face? Come nah man. I’s dee same tchune (aka tune) from laaas’ year! Nuthin’ to grin about.

Yuh know people often use the word ‘hope’ without thinking too much about it. But check the meaning of hope at TFD:  it is about wishing for something with expectation of its fulfilment. I might hope that a million bucks falls from space in my backyard on a cold day in winter, here in dee UK. It eh go happen doh. And likewise, allyuh dong on dat godforsaken rock hopin’ dat Kamla or somebody else go ‘take dee nation forward’. Well it boils dong to matter of opeenion. The reality is, that it is practically impossible to grow wholesome fruit from barren soil. [Ahm, ah talking figuratively eh – and not t’inkin about exceptions in concrete interpretations]. Ah had to mention dis because jes las night I was in skype convo wid annoda top lawyer dong on dee rock going, “Boy Kamla might tu’n t’ings arong eh” – or WTTE.

So – ah t’ink allyuh know what my outlook on 2010 is for Dongkey Rock. Well as a say – whilst I might moan ‘bout all dat, it’s gonna be pina coladas fuh me on dis side, dis year. Take care .. keep duckin’ and divin’! And don’t get caught by bullet or stray penis – right?

No more pot-hong.

The older I get the more disappointed I am that it's taking so long for me to be beamed up. Tonight is a fine example. I send a message to a colleague of mine on Facebook. This is the anonymised sequence:

"Hi Mxxxx
Get skype.. it's easier than this emailing thing. I see there are several people by your name on skype so not sure which one is you. On Skype I'm Xxxxxxx
" [i.e. my Skype ID].

The response:

"Hi
I usually get on the evenings.

Keep well "

You see this is why I should not be on this planet - I doh understand what dee rass the response is about. 'Usually get on the evenings'? What the bloody hell does that mean? But even if there is some kind of typo, or omission, for Pete's sake, look at what the hell you are writing and think just a little bit about what I might understand by that sentence. Get on? Get on? Get on what? The evenings - dat eh makin sense. The soapbox? The bed? A toilet seat? On top of his wife? Get on dee internet in dee evenings? Riiiiiiiggghtt.. so I'm supposed to fill in the blanks? Bull!! Utter bull!

Why should this bother me? Ahhh now you're thinking. This person was a junior who once worked under my supervision. I treated the man like my equal. Gave lots of support and time. On one occasion he took leave without my knowledge, by only seeking the approval of another senior colleague. Leave for what? To attend car-racing at Donnington. That raised my suspicions about a 'thread' of pre-occupatoin with 'self'. I had a polite word about it and he went 'Oh, okay, you've got a point..sorry about that.. it won't happen again'. The senior colleague said more or less the same thing. Scumbag!

Well the person in question In the Facebook convo) was a hard working chap so I was willing to overlook these kinds of mess-ups. Of course when he eventually went back to his country of origin we were on friendly terms and said we would keep in contact with each other. Two or three emails were never answered. Finally I caught up with him on Facebook after about 4 years. So - optimisitic me thought right maybe he'd rekindle a kind of infrequent keeping in contact. Nothing of the kind. The Facebook contact was very infrequent. And now tonight this kind of response above. Yeah, I know people are busy! But hey I too have only 24 hours, like everybody else.

Well here's the decision coming. I'm gonna sack this person from my Facebook collection of so-called 'friends'. "Ooohh.. Cyaptain .. yuh too harsh... dee man keyboard mus' be eh workin' good." - ah could hear somebody sayin' it now. Dis Cyaptain will sail the seven seas alone eef he have to. I sack more friends than I make.

Nah.. as I get older I'm making some tough decisions. Those who demonstrate serious deficiencies in reciprocity and interdependence - or attempt to simulate such - will be sacked. Simulate? You can usually tell a person who simulates. I's like a pot-hong (aka pot hound) hengin' rong you, like rong dee Savannah in POS long time - when yuh eatin' yuh babaque chicken from Moonlight. What dee ass - yuh t'ink - dat pot hong like you? Some ah dem pot-hong used to appear friendly - no joke - jes to get what dey want to get. Den when dey get dey piece o' chicken or bone, and dey gorn! Well yuh see me - all pot-hong of dee so-called human kind, goin' tuh be taught a lesson, umpteen years later. Nah.. ah tracking pot-hong behaviour now .. and at some point ah goin' bawl out MAAASHHH!! MAAASHHH!! and pelt some stone in dey ass.

Over-reactin'.. nah.. nahh.. I've been t'inkin' a lot about dis kind o' syndrome over the last two years. So dee situation above is jes a 'last straw' kinda t'ing. No mo' pot-hong! No more games. Daize it!

Inertia or Apathy?

Inertia – the tendency of a body to remain in a state of rest, or constant motion, unless acted upon by an external force.

Apathy – A state of indifference, lacking emotion or enthusiasm.

I chose to define those words initially, to give a clearer idea of my morning post. While I believe the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago are quite apathetic in their concern for political and economic change, I am not writing about them this morning. I am writing about myself.

I am not apathetic. Definitely not. But I am guilty of being inert.

I hate to disturb the status quo. Most times, I like things the way they are, in my life. Change comes unwillingly to me. There is a certain comfort in routines, in habits.

I am not sure how many persons reading this blog, have read the book Who moved my cheese? by Dr Spencer Johnson. If you have not, I highly recommend it. It is a eye opening insight into what we miss out on, when we refuse to change.

All is not lost with me, I hope. As Cap’n Walker can attest to, I can be moved upon by an external force, once in a while, to change. (^_^)

I decline to give more details at this time, but…  today I would like readers to reflect upon the word POTENTIAL, and what it means to you.
