When I was a child growing up, going to primary school was exciting. Every new school year we got new uniform, new shoes.
Of course, in my case, new shoes meant that flat 'crepe-sole' from Bata, aka 'Bata-dogs' costing about $20.
Contrast this to what I read today in the Express (edited to highlight my point):

A WOMAN accused of abducting a six-year-old girl... was also charged with stealing a pair of black K-Swiss sneakers, valued at $600, from the child and robbing another pupil of a school bag, two copy books, a sketch pad and coloured pencils, all valued at $71.50.
A six year old child (the Guardian has her as 5) going to school with $600 sneakers? I guess even parents are promoting the Bling-Brands-Bail lifestyle. Looking good in school in more important than learning.
