For the love of FLASH

What I see

What you see

For several years, I've been using Firefox as my browser... prior to this, I used Opera.

I have to say, I prefer Firefox because of the addons I find indispensible. The two I will NOT be without are the Flash blocker and the Adblocker.

The Adblocker is self explanatory, and blocks all ads from sites, including the text ads from Google. This is especially handy because of the bandwidth it saves by NOT downloading this extraneous material.

The Flash blocker is a whole new ballgame. Many of the sites I see online now (and remember I am a 'net junkie) are done with some sort of flash.. bandwidth eaters for sure. And my little addon rises to superlative heights.

The stupidity of the Flash is not apparent to everyone, and alas, not even so-called web design professionals know better. Imagine a website like the Trinidad Express, designed for a country where the majority of readers are still on dial up (56 kbps, ergo 3 to 9 kbps actual download speed)... having to see annoying Flash PLUS ads. Yeah, like I am about to wait 2 or more minutes for any single page to load.

So why on earth would a web designer use Flash unless it was absolutely IMPERATIVE? Well, it's ... flashy. And it's the rave. And the designer mainly wants to show off his expertise. And you'd be amazed how much that last reason is true - nearly every designer or upcoming amateur wants his sites to be 'noticed' for expertise rather than efficient professionalism. Sigh...

What prompted this blog was that today I had cause to visit the Express website with a computer that had only Internet Explorer... and my first reactions on seeing all I DON'T see was "Ewww! How garish! How amateurish! How absolutely horrifying!!"
