That dictatorship again

Under the headline " UNC gets Manning secret document", the UNC claims they have received a new version of Pa-trick's plans for an Executive Presidency.

The document, according to Persad-Bissessar, "is evidence in black and white of Manning's intention"... ... it says the executive authority of Trinidad and Tobago shall be vested in the President and subject to this Constitution, may be exercised by him directly or through officers subordinate to him... ..."in the new draft, the DPP can only act in relation to matters of official secrets, terrorism, with prior approval of the Attorney General (AG) and the AG must now approve the DPP in relation to these matters".

Under the new constitution, the Executive President will have the power to appoint the Chief Justice, members of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission, Public Service Commission, Chief of Police, Police Service Commission and the EBC. All appeals to the Privy Council will be abolished.
Now, it may be that the entire document is false, a political gambit played out by the UNC to deter PNM voters, or encourage others to be anti-PNM.

On the other hand, if there is any truth in this, it is far more serious a situation than I previously thought. Lord Acton rightly said "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Or as William Pitt said, "Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it".

I wonder that men who pass themselves off as intelligent, bear the smallest of intentions when power is involved. Placed in a position to help their fellow man, they tend to revile us in the smugness of their perceived superior airs. Power though, is fleeting as a fart in the wind.
Mister Dookeran and Mister Valley are absolutely correct in their assessment of Prime Minister Manning's intentions. The gradual assumption and amassing of absolute power by Manning over the years, and his stated goal to seek the creation of a position for an executive presidency for none other than himself speak clearly of his true intentions. Manning has shown a keen preference for the trappings of absolute power so evident in Zimbabwe's Mugabe. People of Trinidad: Be careful what you ask for or choose to ignore! Just take a look next door at Venezuela. It can and does happen!
This is a comment from the Express.

I wonder though that the 'great' USA will allow this to happen or that countries that have investments in Trinidad will sit and watch while the worst case scenario comes to pass.
