There is much to comment on today, various happenings I see in all three major daily newspapers in Trinidad.
First, the magistrate ruled that there is evidence Hughvon Des Vignes has beaten poor Dr Jankie. For those people who do not know, Dr Jankie is a frail 70 years old man, and for Des Vignes to beat him - well, he might be mad for all we know, or else provoked to the point of insanity.
Secondly, the baby Luke Marshall who died of meningitis is yet to be buried, but more than that, the hospital while admitting an error verbally to the parents, is trying everything it can to cover it up, including
Anand Ramlogan has to be like Rip Van Winkle, asleep for 20 years, if he believes any independent enquiry will be done. Aside from the fact that there is no medico-legal body authorised to carry out such an investigation, stumbling blocks will be placed as it is not in the best interest of the government to have this matter come to light. And we all know the medical boys will stand up for each other. Even if the doctor is a newly qualified intern, he is still part of the chain, and as we all know, every shrimp is still part of the sea.
Even the parents are losing their dignity, reduced to tears and begging to get answers.
The president, Wining Max will be inaugurated in the biggest public display of frivolous wastage (of public funds no less) ever. An open invitation has been sent to the entire country (as well as officials and semi-officials of course) to attend the inauguration ceremony at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
It is scheduled to be an "historic occasion" with invitations forwarded to all regional municipal authorities for general distribution to the public.
Members of the public wishing to attend the ceremony could collect their invitations at the respective offices of the corporations. This is the first public Presidential inauguration, as traditionally they have been held on the grounds of the President's House, St Ann's, and only a selected few are invited.
Money flowing like water, the boys thirsty too bad, ent? But I bet is mainly people of one race will be there in droves for the free-for-all. What the hell was wrong with the old dignified traditional ceremony??
I guess dignity went out of public office with Panday, and the PNM taking it to a whole new level.
Mariano Browne say end to cheap food is here. Well, that's no problem for him. He has found ways to supplement his income so he has no need to fear prices. It is the small man who will lose his dignity in supporting himself and his kin.
A letter to the editor had me smiling this morning, not so much for the humour in expression but for the truth in the words.
