A slap in the face

Once more, the ‘authorities' the form of Gary Griffith, Minister of National Security, Stephen Williams, Commissioner of Police (Acting) and the Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, head of the National Security Council, have all promised to ‘wage war’ on crime.

No more excuses. Results now!

That was the no-nonsense message delivered by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to security chiefs.

Unfortunately, (or maybe I’m just a tad sceptic) I believe this will be just another fart in the wind. I have always postulated that unless crime affects one of these ‘high society’ persons personally, they will all be mere ‘mouthas’, given that we’ve heard these particular passing of wind before. Indeed it was shortly after the self-styled ‘Captain’ Griffith mouthed off in a purported tough stand that the criminals bitch slapped him with an in-your-face murder increase; seemingly to show him who is the real boss.

Imagine, if you will, 19 murders in 7 days. Hold it, you don’t have to imagine… that is the reality. So at the end of the year, we will see approximately 1,000 murders, give or take a few. Wait though… Carnival coming, so we will see a slow down…

In reality, I expect to see well in excess of 700 murders, unless something drastic happens… like another State of Emergency (SoE). I’ve always seen this as a powerful tool to curtail the murders that run apace with the feting. But, Rock Crawlers like their feting too much and so we have protests for the curtailment of feting and partying, but not for the murders of citizens.

I strongly advocate a 2 years SoE, country wide, from 9 pm to 6 am… exceptions given to essential services of course… and let the chips fall where they may. I bet that murders and other serious crimes fall by huge numbers. However, mark my words, the feting will continue to be Number 1, and murders… well, Number 2.
