I've always been taken with these words ever since I heard them. But to me, the Oscar Wilde play has never really brought out the true meaning of these 5 words. I suppose it wasn't meant to, after all it is a satiric look at society.
For me however, these words have a deeper meaning. I see them as reflecting the true importance of any relationship (i.e. interaction with others). It's about saying something and meaning it, being earnest about your actions and intentions as well as speech.
Lately I've met people who haven't been at all truthful, and I have to say I am very saddened (and in some cases - hurt) by this decline in manners and the decay in general morality of people who just seem out to use others. It seems politics alone does not have its own morality after all.
I shudder to think my child has to grow up in this world, and will be feeling as I am some time in the future.

If Wisdom ways you wisely seek,
Five things observe with care.
To whom you speak, Of what you speak,
And Why, When and Where.

So here is a bizarre thought: today, spend a few minutes thinking about the importance of being earnest.
