Alliance? What Alliance?

THE Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) made it clear yesterday that any candidate running for a seat on the UNC Alliance ticket in the General Election constitutionally due this year, must first confirm he/she is a member of the UNC party.

According to the Commission, “any candidate purporting to use the symbol, UNC Alliance against his name on the ballot paper has to inform the Returning Officer that he/she is a member of the United National Congress (UNC).”

The EBC also added that the candidate must “accordingly confirm such membership by presenting to the Returning Officer (on Nomination Day) a list of the UNC party candidates over the signature of the leader of the UNC party.”
This is an excerpt from an article in the Newsday, entitled EBC: Only UNC candidates. (By IRENE MEDINA Saturday, August 4 2007).

Reading these lines tells me that all members of the 'Alliance' are now co-opted members of UNC. In other words they don't have a choice in the matter. By becoming part of the 'Alliance', they are automatically REQUIRED to provide proof that they are actually members of the UNC.

No indication here that members of YesTT or any other will be allowed to retain individual membership of their original party they joined. And this is so ordered by the EBC, no less.

Hmm, does this sound democratic to you? Not only is the UNC tainted by corruption charges and probes and hampered by a demented leader, now they're using bullying tactics to bolster failing membership? And this by bullying no less that their 'allies'?

No wonder Dookeran and COP staying clear of this group. Once again, Panday is showing how sneaky and low he could go, all in a bid to regain (or is it retain?) power.

Only in Trinidad, oui!
