Wanting a baby

Letter published in Guardian 15 July 2007

Mercy me wants a family

This is an open letter to Prime Minister Patrick Manning and Health Minister John Rahael.

I am a young woman who suffers from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and as a result I cannot get pregnant naturally. My only option is introvitro fertilisation, which costs $50,000 and there is no guarantee I would become pregnant.

I have approached most financial institutions in the country for a loan, but have been unsuccessful, even though my husband and I hold permanent positions in the private and public sector.

Sometime last year, I heard there was a decline in births in Trinidad and Tobago. I hope the matter would be looked into by the Government, so as to provide loans to couples who want a family like everyone else.

Anyone with information can contact me via e-mail.

Advice to Mercy: Get a government credit card and head up to New York. While there you may be able to pick up some home fixings and hair pieces for when you have visitors (after having the baby).
